I'm trying The Next Palindrome problem from Sphere Online Judge (SPOJ) where I need to find a palindrome for a integer of up to a million digits. I thought about using Java's functions for reversing Strings, but would they allow for a String to be this long?



You should be able to get a String of length

  1. Integer.MAX_VALUE always 2,147,483,647 (231 - 1)
    (Defined by the Java specification, the maximum size of an array, which the String class uses for internal storage)

  2. Half your maximum heap size (since each character is two bytes) whichever is smaller.

This depends on the CPU you're using, on the OS, on what other processes are doing, on what Java release you're using, and other factors. I've seen a Windows server have > 6500 Threads before bringing the machine down. Most of the threads were not doing anything, of course. Once the machine hit around 6500 Threads (in Java), the whole machine started to have problems and become unstable.

My experience shows that Java (recent versions) can happily consume as many Threads as the computer itself can host without problems.

Of course, you have to have enough RAM and you have to have started Java with enough memory to do everything that the Threads are doing and to have a stack for each Thread. Any machine with a modern CPU (most recent couple generations of AMD or Intel) and with 1 - 2 Gig of memory (depending on OS) can easily support a JVM with thousands of Threads.

If you need a more specific answer than this, your best bet is to profile.

You are confusing compile time, load time, and runtime.

A string literal is added to the constant pool at class loading time. Just a mention of a literal anywhere in the class code is enough; you don't even have to execute any line of code in that class.

On the other hand, the expression new String("literal") yields a new String instance each time it is evaluated. That instance is distinct from the one in the constant pool and has a copy of the string value.

StringBuilder acts exactly the same way as String in this respect: it is initialized with a copy of the string literal's value.

Yes, you will create a new object each time with +=. That doesn't mean it's always the wrong thing to do, however. It depends whether you want that value as a string, or whether you're just going to use it to build the string up further.

If you actually want the result of x + y as a string, then you might as well just use string concatenation. However, if you're really going to (say) loop round and append another string, and another, etc - only needing the result as a string at the very end, then StringBuffer/StringBuilder are the way to go. Indeed, looping is really where StringBuilder pays off over string concatenation - the performance difference for 5 or even 10 direct concatenations is going to be quite small, but for thousands it becomes a lot worse - basically because you get O(N2) complexity with concatenation vs O(N) complexity with StringBuilder.

In Java 5 and above, you should basically use StringBuilder - it's unsynchronized, but that's almost always okay; it's very rare to want to share one between threads.

Yes, it has limitation in capacity of max integer which 2147483647(technically).

StringBuilder internally holds chracters in char[] object, and array has limitation in size. read more about it on other thread
